BBC Lessons on TV and 4 Other Tips for Teaching Kids At Home
Parents, pupils and teachers have been left in the lurch following the sudden closure of schools under the new national lockdown. As children start learning from home again, Tutor House has curated a short list of top resources and tips for teaching at home.
1. BBC to broadcast lessons every day of lockdown 📺
The BBC have stepped up with a fantastic offer that ensures all children can keep learning, whether they have access to the internet or not. Starting from Monday 11th January, the BBC will begin its biggest Education offer in the broadcaster’s history.
Their CBBC channel will broadcast three hours of shows for primary school children from 9am each day. BBC Two will broadcast two hours of lessons for secondary school children each day.
The BBC will also be putting out shows from their archives, which will include factual programmes and dramas that address topics from the school curriculum.
Tim Davie, BBC’s Director General, said that ‘ensuring children across the UK have the opportunity to continue to follow the appropriate core parts of their nation’s school curriculum has been a key priority for the BBC throughout this past year’.
2. Create a structure to the day ⏰
It's important to set up some kind of structure in your child's day as they learn from home. You can create the schedule together and make it fun! For example, you get to choose the first subject and they get to choose the next one. Or, you could choose 2 core subjects for the day and 2 more fun subjects to mix it up.
Routine is important, but don't worry if you don't always stick to the same schedule.
3. Hire an online tutor 👨🏾💻
Online tutoring can be a great way for parents to get a break, and leave the teaching up to someone else. Even if it's just a couple of hours each week, an online tutor offers 1-1 lesson time. Tutors are able to focus on specific subjects and address areas that your child might be finding tricky.
4. Get outside at lunchtime 🍃
We all know how important it is to get fresh air, but when you're busy juggling work and schooling it's easy to forget. Getting out the house for even 20 minutes during your lunchtime is incredibly beneficial for brain function and boosting your mood.
5. Use quizzes and games to make learning fun 🎲❓
If you have the time, using quizzes to learn subjects like History, English or Science is interactive and fun. Your child could even create their own quiz online with a school friend and test each other.
If you're doing a lesson with your older child, you can get them to teach you and have them plan the lesson. It helps students to retain information if they teach a topic they have just learnt to someone else.
